Jake Spoon is a songwriter and harmonica player from Indianapolis — son of a coal miner’s daughter, of direct Hatfield lineage. He writes Blood Memory Folk.
The music is the blood, the beast, the dragon.
Something else came looking for him too. A novel kept like a confession. Cards that read the ground instead of the sky. A tome that knew their names before he did. A board printed from the constellations. 1896. Blackwater country. He didn’t discover it. He wrote down what it told him.
There was a second find. Not from the gate — from an estate sale, a box of tools nobody wanted, at the bottom of which was a handbook with no cover and a corner gone to rot. What was left of it worked. He spent a year rebuilding what the water took, the same two rules holding every page together: bolt it, don’t glue it. Build it so it opens again.
Everything that came through is here.
The Gates Are Open.
